Gifts for people who already have everything
Somebody who has everything usually has one specific habit: when they want something, they buy it, immediately and without waiting for an occasion. That is what removes the obvious options, not an actual surplus of possessions.
It also tells you where the gaps are, because there are categories people reliably do not buy for themselves.
Things nobody buys themselves
Decorative objects with no function are the clearest example. People who buy freely still hesitate over something purely ornamental, because it is hard to justify to yourself and easy to accept as a gift.
The same applies to small luxuries in categories where a person owns a perfectly adequate version already: a nicer candle, better glassware, a soft throw when the existing one still works.
Things that mark a moment
An object tied to a specific occasion cannot be bought by the recipient afterwards without losing the point. Anything dated, anything commemorative, anything referencing a shared event occupies a space nobody can fill for themselves.
This is why keepsakes survive as a category despite being, functionally, ornaments. The function is the reference.
Things they would not admit to wanting
Slightly silly items, comfort items, anything sentimental. Plenty of people who buy freely will not buy a wearable blanket or a novelty mug for themselves, and are delighted to receive one.
The judgement required here is about the person rather than the object. It works when it is clearly affectionate and fails when it reads as a joke at their expense.
Consumables reset every year
The advantage of anything consumed is that owning it once does not preclude receiving it again. This is why food, drink and candles remain the default gift for difficult recipients, and the default is not wrong.
It is only weak if it is obviously the fallback. Choosing a specific thing they mentioned liking, rather than a generic version, is what separates the two.
Ask a better question
Not what do they need, which is genuinely nothing, but what are they currently interested in. Interests change faster than possessions and they point at gaps that a full house does not.
A single well-aimed small thing connected to something they are currently absorbed in beats an expensive thing in a category they have already solved.
When to give up and give consumables
If you do not know the person well and they already have everything, a good consumable given without pretence is a perfectly respectable gift and everybody understands it.
The failure mode to avoid is spending more to compensate for not knowing. An expensive miss is more awkward than a modest, obviously well-meant standard.
