What to send when somebody is having a hard time

Illness, bereavement, a job loss, a bad diagnosis: the hardest gifts to choose are the ones for people who are not celebrating anything. Most of what goes wrong is well-intentioned and comes from the same mistake, which is sending something that requires the recipient to do something.

The useful principle is that a gift at a difficult time should reduce effort, not add to it.

Nothing that needs a response

Flowers need arranging, watering and eventually throwing away. A plant needs keeping alive. A gift that needs assembly needs assembling. All of these arrive as small obligations at a moment when somebody has no capacity for obligations.

The best things in this category are ready to use and require nothing: a blanket, a candle, something to eat or drink. Anything that can sit unopened for a week without spoiling or dying is a good sign.

Comfort is physical before it is symbolic

People under stress are frequently cold, not sleeping, and not eating properly. A heavy blanket, a warm drink, something soft are not clichés for that reason – they are addressing the actual physical state.

This is why comfort boxes tend to be assembled the way they are. It is not sentimentality, it is a list of things that help somebody who is not looking after themselves.

Say what it is for

The most common failure is sending something with no note, or with a note that avoids the subject. A gift that arrives without acknowledgement of what has happened can read as awkwardness rather than care.

It does not require eloquence. Naming the thing and saying you are thinking of them is enough, and it is considerably better than a general message that could have been attached to a birthday present.

Timing: later is often better

The days immediately after bad news bring a flood of attention, and then it stops. Two or three weeks later, when everybody else has moved on, is when people most often say they felt forgotten.

A gift sent deliberately late is not a failure of promptness. It is frequently the one that is remembered.

What to avoid entirely

Anything that implies a project – a self-improvement book, a fitness item, anything organisational. Anything humorous about the situation itself, unless you know the person extremely well and even then with caution.

And anything perishable sent to somebody who may not be home. A box of fresh food arriving to an empty flat while somebody is at a hospital is a small additional cruelty.

Sending to somebody else’s address

Enter their address as the delivery address at checkout. One thing to know: the packing slip lists the contents, so it is not a blind service and the recipient will see what was sent before opening it.

For anything where the surprise matters more than the speed, have it delivered to yourself and hand it over. For a care package, the surprise matters far less than it arriving promptly.
